Lesson 3 - part 1 - how to win a soul to Christ
Now, using a 13 point soul winning plan we are going to look at how to lead someone to receive Jesus Christ as their savior. This plan will cover your fist initial meeting with someone all the way to them receiving Christ. Note, while going door to door the first time you meet someone you will normally only get their names and address, which you should always write down, and then you can follow up sometime and share this plan with them, or if the Lord leads you, you can share it with them on your first visit. Remember, if you don’t use it you lose it, and soul winning is better caught then taught. In other words, experience is the best teacher for the soul winner. If you have never had a plan or thought you don’t need a plan for soul winning, just think, you’ve had plans for less important things. Having a plan will give you confidence and make you ready at all times. Of course, you can always add more to this plan but this gives you a basic course of action, which will give them what they need to know in order to be saved.
1.) Ask them what their church background is.
Once you have found out the individuals name, and have had a few moments of casual conversation about the weather, or sports, turn the conversation to spiritual things and ask them their church background. Never make any negative remarks about their church background, but take note of it, because you may need to make special emphasis on a point later in the conversation. For instance, if they are trusting in their works you would want to show them Ephesians 2:8-9.
2.) Share your testimony.
Once they have shared with you their church background you should follow up by sharing yours and how you came to know Christ. Of course at this time just keep it to about 2 minutes. I normally tell them how I was raised in a pastor’s home, and how I didn’t care much for church, but when I was a teenager God began to speak to my heart and I realized that because of my sins that if I died I would go to hell. I tell them how I had heard about Gabriel blowing his trumpet and the church being called up to heaven, and that if I came out of my room to find no one there that I would think that I got left behind. But on May, 19th 2005 I bowed my head and repented of my sins and asked Jesus Christ to save me and that I now know I’m going to heaven. After you share that, you should then ask them if they died are they 100% sure that they would go to heaven?
3.) Now ask if you can tell them how they can know they are going to heaven.
When you ask them if they are 100% sure that they would go to heaven their response is very important. If they respond with anything other than yes, I am 100% sure, then you treat them like they are lost, and ask them if you can share what the bible says with them.
4.) Teach them all have sinned
Romans 3:10 “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”
Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Tell them that the word sin means to miss the mark. I like to ask them if they have ever shot at a target. I have yet to have one say no. I then tell them that sin means to miss the mark just like we miss the target. God has set a mark with his commandments and we have fallen short of that mark. You can then either go to Romans 13:9 or Exodus 20 to see a list of the Ten Commandments. Just go through each one and explain it and ask if they have ever broken it. If they say they haven’t, don’t let them off the hook, encourage them to think about it. The first commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” I ask them if they have ever put anything before for God, or have they ever gone a day without praying or reading their bible. The third commandment, “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain” I just ask them if they have ever said oh my_______ and put Gods name there. The fourth commandment, “Keep the Sabbath day holy” I ask them if they have ever missed a day of church. With the sixth commandment “thou shalt not kill” I tell them that if they have hated someone or been jealous the bible says they are murderers at heart according to 1John 3:15.
5.) Teach them the penalty for sin.
Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
Romans 6:23a “For the wages of sin is death;”
I tell them that sin causes physical death and spiritual death. I tell them that God told Adam and Eve that the day they ate of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil that on that day they would surely die. Then I ask them, when they ate it did they fall over dead that day? We now that they didn’t but God cannot lie so something must have died in them that day. I tell them that their spirit died in them because they no longer had fellowship with God. You can then take them to Revelation 20:14-15, and talk about hell. At this point, you can also mention based upon your own admission you are a liar, thief, and an idolater. When you stand before God in Judgment will you be innocent or guilty? If they say guilty then ask them if they would go to heaven or hell? If they say they would go to hell ask them if that concerns them? If they don’t believe they are guilty then stop sharing the gospel and follow up with them another time. If they do believe they are guilty then continue.
6.) Teach them Jesus died for their sins.
Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Galatians 2:21 “I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.”
I tell them that you don’t have to reach a state of perfection before you can be saved, that Jesus died for you while you were a sinner. I tell them if you could get to heaven by your good works then Jesus died for no reason. The reason Jesus died was to save you from your sins, so you either trust Jesus’ death on the cross for your salvation or you trust nothing. I tell them that God unleashed his frustration over sin upon Jesus Christ so we could be made righteous in Gods sight 2Corinthians 5:21. I then ask them that just because Jesus died doesn’t mean everyone is going to heaven right? They all agree that is right.
7.) They must receive Jesus Christ for salvation.
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 10:9 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
I tell them that these verses teach that there are three things we must do to receive Jesus Christ as our savior. A.) We must believe on him with all our heart. I use an illustration that when I got married I gave my heart to my spouse along with all my trust. We must give our soul to Jesus Christ for the keeping and put all of our trust in him. B.) We must call upon the name of the Lord. The name Lord means master or boss. I tell them we must be willing to allow Jesus Christ to become our boss. That means we will go to church, stop using curse words, and read our bibles etc. because Jesus says to. C.) Call upon the lord to be saved. I tell them that the word saved means to be rescued. I explain that they are in a situation that they need to be rescued from hell. I ask them to imagine if they were drowning, what would they do if they saw someone that could help them? They say that they would call for help. I tell them that is the same thing they must do with Jesus.
Now, using a 13 point soul winning plan we are going to look at how to lead someone to receive Jesus Christ as their savior.
